Coaches Corner:
Happy Father’s Day to all shark dads!
I cannot thank you all enough for the very few changes to the seeding that had to be done this weekend! Coach Richard, from Rio del Oro, and several of his parents paid us a compliment for a smooth meet with great kids who were so polite! I am very proud of you all! It has been a while since I have reminded you but if you have concerns come and talk to me or send me an email. I cannot address or even fix what I don’t know about. Thank you to all who do so consistently and keep us moving forward! The theme this week is “Meticulousness”. It is time to cross our T’s and dot our I’s. There was a large amount of DQs at this meet due to one hand touches, incorrect turns, missing walls, and things of that nature. Let’s focus on that. What does it look like? Let's do the correct things during practice. I am a firm believer that you will perform in a meet the way you practice. If we never focus on two hand touches, work on turns, show up for practice, or work on the details we won’t perform well at meets.
This week we have a conference meet. Most of our swimmers have swum each event the two required times to be able to swim it in champs and gotten a legal time for them. However, for those swimmers that have not they will now begin focusing on that during meets so you may see that some swimmers are swimming their most difficult events time and again. Additionally, in a conference meet we want to score the most points, and it is important to understand the team vs individual dynamics at a meet. If you are unsure of what that means for your swimmer let’s have a conversation to get on the same page.
Parents, I do have one big ask of you. While I think it is great when swimmers can speak their minds lets help them understand the appropriate situations to do so. I have a few examples of things that we should watch and not do: A swimmer complaining loudly about the other team’s pool at the coaches tables, swimmers complaining about the other team near parents from the other team, and in the not awesome sportsmanship category saying derogatory things about your own teammates and not being aware of your surroundings and realizing the parent of that swimmer is right there, and finally talking about how badly they beat the other swimmer loudly and near their parents/coaches/teammates. Let’s help our swimmers always show the best side of the Sharks and of themselves.
